10 Cold and Flu Prevention Tips. Once again winter is upon us as well as the cold and flu season. As older adults we have weaker immune systems, mostly due to lack of sleep and chronic stress. But even if you have these things going on in your lives, there’s still a lot that we can do to reduce the chances of getting sick and to reduce the length or severity of an illness. So without rambling – let’s get straight to the tips.

Here are the 10 Cold and Flu Prevention Tips to Reduce Your Risk of Getting Sick this Season:

 

  1. Get the flu vaccine – as it reduces the risk of getting the flu and reduces the severity of the illness or infecting others. The best time to get the shot is in October and November, but it’s not too late now.
  2. Wash or sanitize hands often and thoroughly – as it’s an effective way to get rid of cold and flu germs. And thoroughly enough to clean under the nails, backs of hands, between fingers, and wrists. If you don’t have soap – use a sanitizer.
  3. Exercise – as exercise benefits the body and immune system and can possible reduce risk of a cold by a third.

  7. Don’t be around people who are sick – by limiting your contact and not shaking their hands or hugging them.
  8. Avoid crowds and unnecessary travel – try to avoid being in large groups of people, especially in poorly-ventilated spaces, which will increase your chance of catching a cold or flu from an infected person.
  9. Drink plenty of liquids – especially water or hot tea, as this helps the nasal passages stay moist and trap germs before they can spread into the body.
  10. Get your Vitamin C and Protein – it’s better to get your Vitamin C in the foods you eat, but if you can’t – take a 200 mg Vitamin C Supplement. Not enough protein can lower your immune system, so eat plenty of fish, eggs, and yogurt to your diet.
