Day 40 – Love is a Covenant

“Where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God.”
Ruth 1:16

THE DARE: Write out a renewal of your vows and place them in your home. Perhaps, if appropriate, you could make arrangements to formally renew your wedding vows before a minister and with family present. Make it a living testament to the priceless value of marriage in God’s eyes and the high honor of being one with your mate.

RELATIONSHIPS ARE COVENANTS NOT CONTRACTS

As you move forward with your spouse, you need to look at your relationship with them as a covenant and not a contract. There is a big difference between the two.

  • Your covenant says to your spouse “I give myself to you and commit to this marriage for life.” Whereas a contract says “I take you for myself, and we’ll see if this works out.”
  • Your covenant is your verbal commitment to your spouse based on trust – and you’re assuring them with an unconditional promise that is good for life. Whereas if it was a contract, you’re actually casting doubt and distrust in a written agreement – one that outlines conditions and consequences if the agreement is broken.
  • Your covenant is for the benefit of others – namely your spouse. It comes with an unlimited responsibility and one that continues “until death do us part.” Whereas a contract serves no one other than yourself. It comes with a limited time frame for certain conditions to be met and accomplished.
  • Your covenant is intended to be unbreakable. Whereas a contract can be broken with mutual consent.

So how do you keep this covenant strong? With God’s help !!

GOD’S COVENANT TO HIS PEOPLE

God’s covenant with His people is written in the Bible. He keeps His word – His promises. And never once has He broken any of these covenants:

  • to Noah – never to destroy flesh with a worldwide flood (Genesis 9:12-17)
  • to Abraham – that an entire nation of descendants would come from his family line (Genesis 17:1-8)
  • to Moses – that the people of Israel would be God’s permanent possession (Exodus 19:3-6)
  • to David – that a ruler would sit on his throne forever (2 Samuel 7:7-16)
  • to Us – by the blood of Christ, to forgive sin and give eternal life to those who believe in Him (Hebrews 9:15)

The Spirit of God is within you through your faith in His Son and the grace he has given you. And with His help, you are now a covenant keeper no matter what challenges you may face.

Every marriage is God’s heavenly covenant with His Church – God’s unconditional love for us. Let Him be your inspiration and channel His love to your spouse.
