How to Prevent and Treat Dry, Chapped Winter Hands
Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
CHOOSE LOTIONS WITH EMOLLIENTS AND HUMECTANTS
And when applying a moisturizer, look for one that contain two ingredients – emollients and humectants.
Emollients are skin surface lubricants that fill the cracks and crevices on your skin. Make sure your moisturizer contains one of these emollients – lanolin, jojoba oil, isopropyl palmitate, propylene glycol linoleate, squalene, and glycerol stearate
Humectants draw moisture from the air to the skin’s surface keeping your skin hydrated. So look for a product that contains one of these humectants – glycerin, hyaluronic acid, sorbitol, propylene glycerol, urea, and lactic acid.
If your hands are really tender or bleeding due to cracks and fissures, you’ll need a more therapeutic moisturizer – one that contains ingredients such as dimethicone, cocoa or shea butter, or beeswax. Apply the lotion to your hands frequently throughout the day and you should see favorable results in a couple days.
And the best preventative care is how you wash your hands and what you do afterwards. So choose a mild soap, use warm not hot water, pat your hands dry and apply a moisturizer right away.
