Easy Watermelon Rind Slushie and Smoothie
Why You Should Be Eating Watermelon Rind
Easy Watermelon Rind Slushie and Smoothie. Did you know the rind of a watermelon is the most nutritious part of the fruit? I sure didn’t. All I can remember is my mom telling me not to eat the rind as it would give me a stomach ache. And so I never did – for 50+ years.
Fast forward to today. I was cutting up some watermelon (because nothing beats those refreshing juices when it’s 100+ degrees outside) and the hubs said not to toss the rind because it’s supposed to be good for you. And he was right – the health benefits from the rind are mind-blowing.
WATERMELON RIND – DO NOT TOSS THE HEALTHIEST PART
Watermelon Rind contains an amino acid called Citrulline. Research has shown citrulline helps boost your heart health by reducing blood pressure, which is especially beneficial to those with hypertension. This amino acid also helps deliver oxygen to your cells and muscles. So if you’re planning on a workout, blending a cup of watermelon juice with rind would be a very beneficial pre-workout beverage.
But wait – there’s more. Watermelon Rind is rich in dietary fiber which is great for digestive health and can help improve constipation and IBS. The rind also contains Vitamins A, B6, and C, Beta Carotene, Lycopene, Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, and Zinc. NOT TOO SHABBY !!
So the next time you cut up a watermelon, don’t do the usual and chuck the rind. Remove the skin and blend the rind into a healthy drink – like these two. Watermelon and Rind Slushie OR A Watermelon and Berry Smoothie. Simply delish !!
