9 Health Reasons to Make Your Own Bone Broth. Bone broth is a nutrient-rich liquid made by simmering bones, connective tissues, and sometimes vegetables either in a slow cooker or a stewing pot on the stove top. Bone broth has many benefits as you will see in the 9 reasons listed below.

For maximum nutrient extraction, it’s best to prepare bone broth using high-quality organic ingredients and simmer for 8 -12 hours. The broth can be drank as a warm beverage, used as a base for soups, stews, or sauces, or added to grains like rice or quinoa for extra flavor and nutrients.

So first things first – making the broth. This chicken bone broth was the simplest, so it’s the one I’m starting with. I have a smaller 4 quart, Crock Pot Slow Cooker, so I’ll be making broth more often that if I had a larger cooker. Once I move to a larger place I’ll have more room for larger appliances.

EASY CHICKEN BONE BROTH RECIPE
makes 3+ quarts

1 cooked Rotisserie chicken – carcass, legs, and wings (remove breasts and thighs & save for later)
4 carrots, scrubbed not shaved, snapped in 4 pieces
4 Celery stalks, scrubbed and snapped into 4 pieces
1 onion, peeled and cut into 8-10 pieces
1/2 lemon squeezed
1/2 Jalapeno pepper (approx 3 slices), 1 whole if you like it hot
1 Ginger piece, not shaved, large, scrubbed and cut into med size pieces
1 tbls Turmeric powder
3 pinches Pink or Grey Salt

Add all the ingredients above to your slow cooker. Fill the pot with water, covering all ingredients completely. Cover slow cooker and put on high for first 30 minutes. Then drop to a low setting and slow cook for a minimum of 6 hours – more is better, I like to cook mine for 12 hours.

Once done, remove all vegetable and bone pieces from the broth, then put the liquid through a strainer. I simply strained mine through a colander to remove all the larger pieces. However if you want pure liquid, strain the broth through cheese cloth. That should remove every last piece of veggies.

The broth tastes best when it’s drank warm or sipped hot. The broth can be stored in the refrigerator up to 3-5 days, best to store in glass containers or jars. You will notice the broth will gel up once cold, which is all good. Just warm it up and drink as usual. YUMMY
