10 Ways Your Body Changes After 50. Experience and Wisdom – two major benefits we all have going for us once we reach age 50. We’ve hit that milestone – we’ve earned our bragging rights. And these are all good things to have under our belts.
But unfortunately, along with the good we also have to take the “not so good” – and that “not so good” news is once we reach age 50, our bodies start showing signs of ageing. We can try our best to get rid of the wrinkles, sagging skin, and crows feet with Botox or plastic surgery. Or hide them with the latest and greatest products on the markets today. But there are just some things that our bodies will go through that are inevitable and we’ll have no control over. No need to be alarmed – just be aware.
And you may already have experienced a couple of these and say to yourself – well that explains it. Mine is #1 – Craving Foods I’ve Never Craved Before. So read on and see if you can relate to any of these – CIAO 🙂
10 WAYS OUR BODIES CHANGE AFTER AGE 50
CRAVING FOODS YOU’VE NEVER CRAVED BEFORE – undoubtedly due to your changing hormones, an imbalance of hormones, such as leptin and serotonin. Your body could also be telling you something – you’re lacking certain nutrients. Make sure to take a multi-vitamin every day
YOU’RE STARTING TO SHRINK – It’s all due to your disks in your spinal column, that get thinner as you age. Harvard research says you’ll start losing about half an inch of height each decade after 40.
DIMINISHING NIGHT VISION – especially while driving at night, which is totally normal and usually starts around age 40. And once you’ve hit age 55 – have your eyes checked for Macular Degeneration, as it’s quite common once you’ve hit that age.
BLADDER CHANGES – you can forget about getting a full nights sleep. According to Dr. Ryan P. Terlecki, 15-20% of those over 50 wakes up at least twice in the middle of the night to urinate.
YOUR SWEAT SCENT STARTS TO CHANGE – this is when you get a distinct smell of your own. As you age, your changing hormones can cause a serious shift in how you smell. And if you’re taking any medications, they can also impact your scent.
YOUR HEART GROWS IN SIZE – throughout your lifetime your heart experiences natural wear and tear, no matter how healthy you are. And post-50 your heart rate starts to slow along with your arteries becoming stiffer. This combination of a slower rate and stiffening arteries can lead to an enlarged heart, too, which is often the start of heart disease.
ACCESSING MEMORIES – according to the AARP , new brain cells grow well into your 50s and 60s. And if you want to learn a new skill, there’s no better time than later in life. But along with the good comes the bad – your ability to access memories, finding it harder to recall information like you used to. To prevent this keep exercising your brain, physically exercise regularly and keep a thriving social life.
SALT AND SWEET TASTE SLOWLY FADE – this is due to the decreasing, and not regenerating fast enough, cells in your nose that pick up aromas, which in turn makes all of your food taste just a little blander. And the signals from your nose to your brain start to diminish, making it more difficult to distinguish what it is you’re eating. The salty and sweet foods are the first to go, and then bitter and sour.
YOUR JOINTS BECOME NOISY – according to the AARP, they say it’s normal to hear your bones creak and pop as long as there’s no pain. These noises are usually due to the ligaments tightening around the moving joints or the tendons over the joint snapping. It’s all a natural part of aging if there’s no swelling or numbness when you hear the creaking and popping.
YOUR TEETH NEED ATTENTION – once you hit age 50, your teeth enamel starts to wear down, making you more susceptible to decay and cavities. Visit your dentist regularly for cleanings.
So don’t worry about growing older, just be aware to the changes that may be occurring. And make sure to enjoy your 50 year milestone – you deserve to.
